Evaluation.

 

On the day it went very smoothly with no hiccups, our extensive planning paid off, although due to circumstances beyond our control we had to deviate from our original plan, this included last minute changes to the focus of the event, having to completely change the angle at which we were pitching the event to our audience e.g. it went from an annual event encouraging young people to do the course, to a one off event enticing young people into the media industry. Another problem we encountered related to the above problem was a lot of things had gone to press & banners & flyers were printed so we had to contact all of the companies in concern & make sure all evidence of the previous idea had been scrapped. Having looked at the feedback if I was to do this project again I would pitch it more of a round table discussion with the guest speakers answering the same questions, e.g. in the style of BBC’s question time. On the technical side I also feel that if we were a little more organised we could ironed out a lot of technical problems that could of easily been avoided. E.g. having showreel’s already loaded in the computer, would have saved waiting & would have been more professional. In summary the event went very well, as a group we worked well together I personally feel our portfolio illustrates this & as well as the event itself, there is very little I’d change if I was to do this again!

Group Event.

My day started by organising the front desk, as it was my job role to check delegates in giving them name badges, explaining the quizinaire and handing out cookie tokens. Unfortunately there were a few that turned up late, but as a group we decided to carry on without them. Once everyone was checked in and seated we were able to join in & watch the conference & guest speakers.

 

I found Cormack’s speech most interesting as I am most interested in journalism, subjects touched upon during his speech, are new concepts not learnt on the course, but very much tap into my interest in print journalism. Consequently I have decided to go back to my roots within the factual entertainment to focus my efforts in the future on the journalistic aspect of the media industry.

 

I found Jason Holmes show real really entertaining & riveting as it was the beginning of a programme, illustrating well that it is so hard to create a show real that informs people of exactly what you do.

 

I found Valerie’s speech interesting as it was more of a personal account of her route into the media, talking about highs & lows & manoeuvring & taking / making career decisions to get her next promotion / job. Conveying a holistic point that sometimes you need to take a step back in order to move forward.  

 

I found Laura’s speech also very interesting as again it was very much a personal account, but she tailored what she was saying very much towards the audience. E.g. 16 / 17 year old boys. I also liked the point she made about having a fall back plan, by all means be enthusiastic & keen to put yourself about in the media, but always having a back up if all goes wrong.

 

After the event we got the opportunity to sit with guest speakers over lunch to talk about the media industry some more.

Blog 4.

 Chairing the meeting.

 

Meeting number 7 I chaired, initially I wasn’t overly comfortable with the role, but as soon as the meeting got underway I slipped into the role comfortably. In this meeting we covered a lot of ground as it was the final meeting before the event. We finalised the Budget, with Kim giving us the low down on what was agreed with North Somerset & Sadie Skellon (He Funding co-ordinator for Weston College). North Somerset county council agreeing to give the full funding amount, requested of £750.00, & Sadie Skellon agreeing to give £500.00 of College money, giving us a total budget for the event of £1,350,00. We discussed the speakers & in which order we’d like them to appear on stage on the day, we decided as a team that Valerie Burke-Ward, Commissioning Editor would go 1^st, Cormac Macmahon Heart Fm news editor would go 2^nd, Jason Holmes Freelance Director would go 3^rd, & Laura Abrahams Freelance Producer would go last. We decided to place them in this order based on their showreels & personal statements & how in this order flowed nicely, with one perfectly leading into the other. Unfortunately the actors cancelled last minute. Alecia confirmed that the performance space had been booked. Sam confirmed that the posters & fliers would ready in time. & I confirmed that the press release would have gone to press by the deadline. The only thing we were unable to get a definite answer on was the time scale on the banners being done on time. All in all it was a very good meeting, we covered a lot of serious matters, & I can say by the end of the meeting, I am now confident & happy to chair other meetings in the future.

“Your Media, Your Future.”

Weston College Interactive Media Event.

 

Broadcast Media students from Weston College are hosting an Interactive Media Event titled “Your Media, Your Future” aimed at School leavers to inform them of the various jobs & roles within the media industry, with personal accounts from guest speakers of their route into the media industry. “If you’re interested in Film, TV, or Radio this is a great opportunity to find out how to get into the industry, & meet industry professionals.” Sam Simmonds event organiser & Broadcast Media Student.

 

The Event will be held in the performance space at Weston College’s University Campus, Loxton Road, Weston-super-Mare on Tuesday 5^th May 2009 between 10am & 12:15pm. The Event includes guest speakers Cormac Machon Radio News Editor Heart FM, Valerie Burke-Ward Freelance TV Producer, & Jason Holmes Freelance TV Director. Sketches, & interactive workstations with a quizanaire, prizes up for grabs. “This promises to be a very entertaining event with top level speakers from TV, Radio and a Film Production. The second year students on the Foundation Degree in Broadcast Media have done a very good job in organising this event for one of their assignments.”  Said Kim Brooke Co-ordinator of the Foundation Degree in Broadcast Media.

Web Blog 1.

About the conference.

This module is about organising a media event. It will involve all the same sorts of production skills speaker & customer liaison that of which are similar to those involved in organising a film. We will look at event planning and management skills, budget planning, & time management. We will have to deliver an event including drafting & editing promotional material. e.g. websites fliers & posters.  Initially we brainstormed ideas & came up with the idea of an interactive event aimed at school leavers encouraging them to sign up for the foundation degree, & or to continue to pursue a career in the media industry. But during the later stages of planning we had to change the direction of the event due to unforeseen circumstances. The event is still aimed at school leavers, but its main emphasis is to encourage youngsters to consider the possibilities of a career within the media. I am most looking forward seeing this project through, from concept to fruition, as I believe our idea of a interactive media event will tap into youngsters minds & will hopefully enthuse them to start a career in the media or persuade those already in the media to further their career. I am a little apprehensive about a few of the leadership roles involved during this module, but I hope I will succeed & learn to conquer my leadership fears.
