Deal or no Deal has a 4 day turn around from hitting the cutting room floor to sitting on chief execs desk at Channel Four, It is extremely tight deadline achieve “No time for slacking” As Clayton the editor I was working with said.
The four days:
1/. Edit two, to two & half days.
2/. !/2 day editor producer viewing.
3/. !/2 day to Make changes.
4/. Goes to executive producers.
5/. More changes take place.
6/. 1 day goes onto tape.
7/. Goes to channel 4.
Deal or No Deal is very clever; it is in effect 2 shows. 1 is a very comedic show for the audience all puns intended full of sexual rude innuendo’s, inappropriate to broadcast at 4:15pm in the afternoon.. The other show is completely different, it has a strong story line, it is personal to the player, you at home are involved.
Clayton the editor said its “The editors job to make something boring, interesting by any means possible”
Whilst shadowing Clayton our 1st job was to sit & watch through the footage taking note of any key points. It is essential through the 1st half of the show (the 1st 5 boxes) to get a feel for the character, looking for good storylines + plots & subs plots perhaps not related to the player, maybe between Noeal & the Banker that can be good strong anchor points throughout the whole show.
It is Vital to keep a constant theme going. So in our case it was football, as our player was into his football.
Clayton was constantly looking for jokes to keep pace & keep comedy high, an example of this is the pudding joke we cross referenced this back to the bankers sticky toffee joke, then back to pudding gag, We were very reliant upon jokes, gags & sub plots during our edit, as the show we were editing had a very weak contestant, with a weak storyline. Although a highlight of the game was when IP (the contestant) had to kiss another guy on the lips for taking out the 1p.
The aim of deal or No Deal is to weave everyday boring mundane life into a box opening game.
Keys points made whilst editing IP game:
1/. Whilst editing the 1st box of every round leave no cuts, the idea is to ramp the game straight up into flow.
2/. Bantering references back & forth to pudding joke.
3/. Getting IP’s pros / cons , balance comments for deal or no deal.
4/. Cliff hanger sling shot viewer, drag out “I’m not greedy, its been tough NO DEAL!”
5/. Noel “what you got Judith? 10p?” Keep the moment going. (Banker has to think long & hard he’s in trouble) Banker hangs up. A few moments later banker rings back offers 20K.
6/. Nice monologue we keep it going.
7/. “ THANK YOU MR BANKER ……… DEAL!”
8/. Noel now builds up the tension.
9/. The phone again, he gets offered bankers gamble.
10/. More good monologue.. BANKERS GAMBLE………. “No Deal “
I must say I wasn’t really looking forward to the editing suites, as I don’t
Particularly like editing, but I was pleasantly surprised & had an amazing,
Enjoyable & interesting experience. I have learned a lot about professional editing &
Think it maybe something I might be interested in doing in the future.
